Shillings, M-Pesa and cards: paying your way
Updated 2026-10-22Tanzania runs on the Tanzanian shilling (TZS) and on mobile money. Here is how to keep paying simple.
Mobile money
M-Pesa, Airtel Money, Mixx and HaloPesa are used everywhere, from hotels to street food. With a local SIM registered in your name you can send and receive money from your phone. [Confirm current SIM registration requirements for visitors.]
Cards
Hotels, larger restaurants and malls usually take Visa and Mastercard. Smaller places often do not, so carry some cash or mobile money too.
Cash
ATMs are common in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar and Morogoro town. Keep small notes for taxis, tips and markets.
